Michelle M. Pillow's "Surrender to the Sea" is a compelling novel that takes readers into the underwater world of Atlantes, where mythology and romance mix. The plot is a brilliant take on the typical damsel in distress cliche, with Brutus rescuing ladies from the surface world and transporting them to the abyss. The world-building is detailed and engaging, and the characters are well-developed and believable. Surrender to the Sea is the fourth book in the Lords of the Abyss series about the mermen from the fabled Atlantis aka Atlantes and their journey to finding love and redemption. Although these books are technically standalone stories there is a continuing theme running through all the books and for this reason, I believe they are best listened to in the correct order, otherwise you'll miss some of the continuing story. That said the author does a good job of telling you what you need to know so should you decide to start here you won't be totally lost.

I have enjoyed all the books in this series but I can honestly say that this one is my favourite book in the series to date. Mainly because of the main characters Brutus and Laurel. I really liked Brutus he's an interesting character, very dominant and sure of his place as a hunter and the status that brings in his society. But when he suddenly has a woman to care for his confidence takes a knock although he's so very sweet as he tries, in his way, to make things easier for Laurel to accept. Then there's Laurel who despite having a hard time adjusting to the fact that the rest of her life will be spent underwater is willing to give her new life with Brutus a chance.

Their story has plenty of steam, as well as moments of confusion but overall their romance was sweet and hot despite the incidents with the evil mermaid cult. So if you are looking for a series full of romance, mermen, dangerous mermaids, ancient curses, and lots of steam as well as an adventure you won't go wrong with this series or this book.
